Motivation 10th Grade Lesson Plan
As students enter high school, the demands of the Common Core Standards for literature become more demanding and detailed. Students must be able to independently analyze canonical texts and describe how those texts themselves borrow and reassemble elements and themes from other texts. Like in the previous lessons, students must manipulate media and technology in order to understand how the “re-mixing” of a text can create new meaning. However, at this age, they must also be able to explicitly identify and describe the relationship between medium and message, and how changing the medium necessarily affects the message of the text. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet makes an excellent case study for this lesson because it both borrows from earlier texts and has been “re-mixed” and re-presented in so many different ways.
