Motivation 4th Grade Lesson Plan
In the Common Core English/ Language Arts Curriculum for 4th grade, students are introduced to traditional stories and myths from many different cultures, and are challenged to explore the themes and topics within these stories. Heroic myths are an excellent medium for students to begin playing with the concepts of authenticity and adaptation, because these stories introduce many of the themes that have remained consistent throughout the history of literature, such as good and evil, heroism, and change. In this lesson, students will use online resources to find a “re-telling” or “re-mixing” of a myth or fable that they read in class. This is a very openly designed lesson that can be easily changed to fit with students’ needs. For example, students could work on a concrete level, comparing the myth of Hercules with the Disney film Hercules, or they could work on an abstract level, comparing Norse mythology with The Lord of the Rings or Greek mythology with The Lightning Thief.
